When should you Prune?

The ideal time to prune is in the late winter or early spring, just before the tree starts to grow buds. If pruning is needed after the tree has already begun to bud, it is better to postpone any pruning until the leaves have fully grown out. Dead and low hanging branches should be pruned immediately for the tree's health and safety of others. Typically, newly planted trees need a minimal amount of pruning for the first couple years.

Why is it important to prune trees?

Pruning trees can enhance both the appearance of the surrounding space and the health of the tree. Pruning is an important practice which ensures that it does not grow out of control and lengthens the life of your trees. When pruning is done regularly, trees can also be assessed regularly and any disease can be avoided or discovered earlier.

Pruning Practices in Burnaby

Before pruning, we always put together a tailored plan that will leave the tree beautiful, healthy and free from diseases. It's crucial that when pruning is performed to your tree it is meticulously planned out and completed. If done in a careless manner, pruning can harm your tree. For example, one popular practice called "tree topping" may greatly diminish a tree's life. In fact, tree topping can put the tree at risk of disease. Another practice usually performed on newly transplanted trees involves reducing the crown to make up for loss of root mass. Doing this is unnecessary and often ends up causing harm to your tree. Harmful pruning practices like this are why all of our arborists that will be doing work on your trees are fully certified. Our approaches to pruning has been cultivated after more than a decade of trial and error, and have been proven to be safe and healthy for your tree.

How Long Does It Take?

The amount of time it will take to prune a tree depends entirely on how big the tree is. A small tree can take around an hour, while a large tree may normally require the entire day to prune completely.

Is there anything I need to do before I have my tree pruned?

We will need to know of any special lawn sprinkler systems you have close to the tree to prevent any damage from branches falling. Lawn furniture, decorations, playsets, and any other objects must be stored at a safe distance away from the tree that we will prune before our team gets there. Last but not least, please ensure that we will have wide open access to where the tree is located on the day of the appointment.
