When should you Prune trees?

A good time to prune is in the early spring or late winter, shortly before trees begin to grow buds. If the tree has already started to bud and pruning is needed, it is best to postpone any cuts until the leaves have fully grown out. Low hanging and dead branches should be pruned immediately for safety reasons. In most cases, only a small amount of pruning is necessary for the first three years after planting a tree.

Why is it important for trees to be pruned?

Pruning trees can enhance both the aesthetics of the surrounding space and the well-being of the tree. Tree pruning is an important practice which lengthens the lifespan of your trees and ensures that it does not become overgrown. When pruning is done regularly, trees can also be assessed regularly and any diseases can often be avoided or detected at an earlier stage.

How to Properly Prune a Tree in Tsawwassen

In order to have a tree be healthy, beautiful and free from diseases, we always create a custom plan as our first step before we prune. It’s important that when pruning is performed to your tree it is meticulously planned and carried out. If done in a careless manner, pruning can harm a tree. For example, one popular method called “tree topping” can effectively reduce the life of a tree. In fact, tree topping can put the tree at risk of disease. Another method commonly performed on recently transplanted trees consists of thinning out the crown to compensate for root loss. Doing this is unnecessary and often ends up harming the tree. Harmful pruning methods like this are why all of our arborists that will be doing work on your trees are fully certified. Our approaches to pruning has been refined after more than a decade of trial and error, and are scientifically proven to be safe and healthy for your tree.

How Long Does It Take?

The length of time required to prune a tree depends entirely on how big or small the tree is. A small tree may take around an hour, while a large tree may on average take a entire working day to prune completely.

Is there anything I need to prepare before you prune my tree?

You’ll need to let us know of any special lawn watering systems you have close to the tree to avoid any accidents due to fallen branches. Playsets, decorations, lawn furniture, and all other potential obstructions should be moved safely away from the trees that we will prune prior to our appointment. Last but not least, please make sure that we will have access to the tree on the day of the appointment. This will avoid any setbacks in completing the job.
